The destinations
Thac Ba
One of the biggest lakes in Vietnam, created when the flow of the Chay river was blocked on purpose to reserve water for the hydro power plant of Thac Ba. The lake covers over 23000 hectares and it’s 80 km long. Due to the vastness of the lake and small population living sparsely along the bank, the lake remains in a clear, blue water. Dotted on the water are green pinnacles of the old hills which are now submerged. Local boats go out fishing on daily basis as the lake provides an abundant supply of shrimp and fish. Motorbike riders can also enjoy a local boat trip out to the water and enjoy the calm, vastness of the lake.
Along the lakes are small communities, of which the Dao people make the most of the population. Most of them still live in their traditional houses on stilts, eking out a living from growing rice or fishing or growing tea along hillsides. Recently, some local homes have been open to travelers for accommodation as home-stay, this makes local life somehow better.
Bac Kan is a mountainous province which offers fabulous scenery of mountains, rivers and forests. Lying in the heart of the province is the Ba Be lake, which looks like a blue gem from above due to its crystal clear water. Surrounding the lake are forests and rivers. This is one of the 100 largest natural fresh water lakes in the world and has been recognized as a National heritage. The lakes lies 145 m above sea level, covering an area of 650 ha. The length of the lake is also 8 km, contracted in the middle. Fencing the lakes are high Karst formations, which offers fabulous view to have an easy motorcycle ride around.
There are minority villages dotting the National Park, of which the most commonly met are the Tay, who have been living here the longest.
